7 events not to be missed in May/June 2017 in Petersburg1. Victory Day on May 9
Second is May 9th, Victory Day (День Победы). This has always been a special day and a great celebration in Saint Petersburg. The traditional Victory Day parade, fairs, a concert, lots of flowers, smiles, tears of joy, and of course, grand fireworks seen only once a year.
2. Peterhof Fountains opening on May 20
Every year the park of Peterhof (Петергоф) is the site of a fascinating celebration as its famous fountains are turned on. After a break from visitors in winter, Peterhof comes back to life. A all-day festival is held with a fanfare, classical music performance, fireworks and other side events. In 2017 it will be held on May 20 – we’ve already begun to count down the days!
3. The night of Museums on May 20 (Saturday night)
The 2017 St Petersburg night of Museums (Ночь музеев) will fall on the night of May 20th to 21st. The weekend will be packed, but well worth it! The Petersburg museums are always happy to join this international event and prepare many master classes, special exhibitions, and original excursions. It's a great chance to visit the Hermitage’s secret room, which opens its doors only on this night! Or discover a new museum of your choice... You write how the story goes on this amazing night!
4. City Day on May 27
City Day in Saint Petersburg (День города) is always celebrated on May 27. On that day, Peter I laid the foundation stone of the Peter and Paul Fortress (Петропавловская крепость), the heart of the city. This year is not a major milestone, but we are happy to celebrate Saint Petersburg’s 314th anniversary! In the recent years, a big classical music show was organized on the Palace Square (Дворцовая площадь) with world famous opera soloists, such as Anna Netrebko, Elina Garanca, Yusif Eyvazov, Ildar Abdrazakov, Massimo Giordano, Hibla Gerzmava, Maria Guleghina and other artists.
5. "Алые паруса" on June 23 (Friday night)
All students and school children in Saint Petersburg are anticipating this special white night on June 23. Every year a big show, "The Scarlet Sails" (Алые паруса), is organized in their honor on the Neva banks. Just imagine the darkened waters of the Neva, the mesmerizing music, fireworks, and of course, the holiday’s big hero: a wonderful ship with scarlet sails, the symbol of hope and faith in the future!
6. "The White Nights Stars" festival from May 26 to July 23
No need to worry about the exact date here – the Mariinsky Theatre will delight visitors with magnificent performances almost every day for most of June. And don’t worry about the quality: over its 24-year history "The White Nights Stars" has proven to be one of the largest and most interesting musical events in the world. Whatever you prefer – opera, ballet, or a symphony concert – you will long remember this evening. Note that tickets must be booked in advance, as the festival is very popular.
7. FIFA Confederations Cup from June 17 to July 2
In 2017, St Petersburg will host several football games during the FIFA Confederations Cup (on June 17/22/24 and July 2). This tournament takes place one year before the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Definitely not to be missed if you are a football fan!
